Couture Details, Thoughtful Fit: Knit Top & Wool Crepe Skirt

Eileen says, “The knit top was made with Today’s Fit Vogue 8151 version A.  This is a Sandra Betzina pattern with sizing that comes in letters A to J.  The shoulders needed some adjustment for me, which I made on the pattern by tracing my TNT T shirt pattern on before cutting out. The fabric used is a print rayon jersey (sold out) from my fabric collection. (Vintage Roz from Sew Much Fabric) The front and back of the top is lined with tricot knit.  I used a Stretch needle (size 70) and Guterman 596 polyester thread for this top in my Chocolate Brown collection.

The coffee bean/eggshell white pinstripe wool crepe skirt was made using Vogue 1683 version A.  I modified the skirt pattern using my pencil skirt toile, shortened the length by four inches and added 1 ½ inches to both the left and right fronts.  The skirt is a wrapped skirt, and I needed extra coverage in the front when sitting down. Construction of the skirt included cutting it out on the cross grain for a vertical stripe and underlining the fashion fabric with white cotton lawn to show the sheer woven stripe and provide support.  The skirt fronts were constructed with silk charmeuse lining to the edge instead of hem facings that were part of the pattern instructions. I used couture sewing techniques to make the skirt because I like this type of sewing.  The skirt fronts are hand understiched and the zipper put in by hand using a prickstitch.  The waistband is a grosgrain ribbon facing with a hook and eye closure.”
